About Metropolis Hungarian Vizslas

Decades of Dedication

First registered for breeding in July 2010, the principal of Metropolis, Robyn Hanney, had decades of experience at Australia’s premier commercial law firm, before reskilling and pursuing other interests. She has owned and been involved with Hungarian Vizslas since 1999.

Metropolis breeds for easy going temperament and English type, and proudly continues the bloodlines of Kimlise Hungarian Vizslas. Like Kimlise, we aim to produce excellent companions with temperament and conformation conforming to the English breed standard, able to perform as gundogs if desired.

While our dogs have been very successful in the show ring, with in Show wins at both All Breeds and Specialty shows, we aim to nourish all aspects of their gun dog character. Our dogs live as pets and in kennels. They enjoy hours free in our yards and in our home, taking advantage of our bespoke facilities, as well as outings to Sydney, various shows, and elsewhere.

Certain standards of behavior have always been expected of Metropolis dogs, and to that extent any interaction can be a training exercise. Metropolis dogs are allowed to be dogs. When conditions permit, they roll in manure, swim in dams, hunt through grass, and follow interesting smells. If they point birds or other animals on a walk, we encourage that pointing. Generally they love to swim. Their living arrangements have deliberately been designed to provide stimulation and to enable them to nourish their vizsla passions. Our dogs flourish on a philosophy of consistent discipline, plenty of exercise, and affection We believe in correction and redirection in order to guide the dog to find the desired action for itself.

Our pups are exposed to a range of stimuli, including undertaking neurological stimulation exercises to increase their resilience to stress and boost their immune systems, exposure to leads, and crate training. Significant hours are invested in each pup, preparing them to deal with the world they are about to enter. We also deliberately expose our dogs to a range of social situations (human and canine), which enables us to be confident of their behavior in most circumstances.

A Home for Life

Metropolis breeds to provide good dogs for good homes. There is generally a waiting list for pups, but at times there may be dogs who need to be rehomed. Metropolis aims to place vizslas in the home best suited to each dog, and to provide buyers with the vizsla best suited to them. Why a Metropolis Vizsla?

We consider the following to be the main factors that distinguish Metropolis Hungarian Vizsla Kennels and our dogs from others.

Our dogs’ reputation for having stable, confident outgoing temperaments, and adapting well to various situations. We intentionally breed away from anxious or exciteable temperaments. Some of our dogs have a distinctive “seal bark” or develop it with age, which is less sharp that a usual bark. We generally don't rehome our older dogs because we enjoy them so much as our pets.

Our professional reputation and career experience, which is reflected in our working relationships with a number of professionals who are well regarded in their own fields, including experts in canine reproduction, veterinarians, animal behaviouralists, as well as other highly regarded registered breeders in a number of countries. You can see Our Partners page for more information.

Metropolis Vizslas’ bloodlines are unique in the southern hemisphere and outside the UK. They have an established reputation over 20 years old in Australia via Kimlise Hungarian Vizslas having started in 1997 the bloodlines inherited by Metropolis in 2010.

The large amounts of unsolicited positive feedback provided to us by owners of our dogs confirms, you can read their testimonials here.

Transparency. As part of our independent approach, and our experience of more than a decade being happy simply to own vizslas as pets before we began breeding and showing, we provide transparency on a number of matters that many breeders do not. While we aim to breed the best structure we can, our primary focus is on sociable outgoing temperaments, as set out in the breed standard.

Our showing success at the highest levels in Australia and internationally as an objective measure of the standards we believe our dogs achieve. Our dogs have achieved international showing success, including setting a record for the youngest Best of Breed Vizsla in the UK at the UK’s biggest 2 day show, winning at Crufts, being titled in the USA, and being sought by international breeders. Meanwhile, our focus is on breeding to satisfy all aspects of the Breed Standard - and raising vizslas who will be delightful and superior pets.

Our investment in our breeding program. We have intentionally built the best facilities we know of in order to raise our pups and house our dogs as well as we can. We have invested significant effort and funds in semen from healthy dogs who are some of the most successful dogs in New Zealand and the USA, as well as importing our own dog from the UK in 2020. 8 of our dogs are owned by vets or relatives of vets, which we consider the highest possible endorsement of their health.
